Історія
Фонд The Gairdner Foundation був створений в 1957 році Джеймсом Артуром Гайрднером. Перше вручення премій відбулося в 1959 році. На 2009 рік премію отримали 298 осіб з 13 країн, включаючи 42 канадців.
Лауреат цієї премії традиційно розглядається як головний кандидат на Нобелівську премію з медицини. За даними на 2007 рік, 69 Нобелівських лауреатів до неї раніше вже отримали Міжнародну премію Гайрднера. Премія в розмірі 100.000 канадських доларів вручається щорічно, як правило, кільком (3-6) біологам або медикам.
